LONDON – On Monday, October 26, 2026 the London Palladium is hosting The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony. As the most prestigious award in soccer, the ceremony recognizes and awards the best male and female players in soccer globally over the previous season. This year’s revision carries a very specific significance, marking the 70th anniversary of this event brought to life by France Football magazine.
The evolution of the sport globally is perfectly reflected by the history of the award itself. After the creation of the Ballon d’Or in 1956, and lasting until 1995, only European players were eligible to receive the award. This historical rule means even the best players of all time like Pele and Diego Maradona have never once won the award during their careers. Since 2018, the Ballon d’Or Féminin has awarded the best female soccer players globally, showing how much the sport has grown.
Central to the allure of the award is the rigid and very prestigious voting process, which is specifically designed to ensure fairness. One international journalist is selected per nation to participate in the voting, and each chooses their favorites based strictly on the player’s individual performances during the past season. The criteria for the Ballon d’Or is awarded based on three vital pillars, which are strictly ordered from importance: individual performance, team achievements, and class combined with fair play. The voters explicitly take the player’s overall impact on the team into account before making their final decision.
The release of the 2026 Ballon d’Or shortlist has ignited debates across sports bars and pubs all around the world. On the international front, Spain is heavily represented with 6 nominations with Pau Cubarsi, Marc Cucurella, Ferran Torres, Fabián Ruiz, Lamine Yamal and Rodri. On the club front, PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) absolutely dominates the shortlist with an outstanding 10 nominees. With players like Ousmane Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi, Nuno Mendes, Fabián Ruiz, Ferran Torres and more. They share space on the star-studded shortlist with global icons like Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, Vinícius Júnior, Declan Rice, Michael Olise, and Luis Díaz.
King Kane might have the most extensive credentials on this list. He has scored 73 goals throughout all competitions with Bayern Munich and England this past season. As the captain, he has led England to third place in the World Cup. In the process becoming the all-time leading goal scorer for England at World Cup finals, totaling 6 goals throughout the tournament. He has obtained the European Golden Shoe as Europe’s top scorer, and he has also won three trophies for Bayern Munich.
As for fair play, he holds a strong and unique place of discipline. His peers and officials around him say he communicates calmly, completely refusing to aggressively confront people on the pitch. Remarkably, Kane has never once received a red card in his professional career. To add to that, Harry Kane does a lot of social work off the pitch to a nearly performative level. He drives The Harry Kane Foundation, based on improving mental health and habits in the younger generation, and he has successfully helped fund mental health education across 60+ schools. His biggest dilemma may be how his domestic scores are counted versus the Champions League and the World Cup. Either way, Harry Kane has a phenomenal reputation when it comes to class and fair play.
Lamine Yamal is an emerging beast of the new era of football. He has embarked on a historic 2026 season. This is an insanely impressive feat considering he has only just turned 19 years old right in the middle of the World Cup tournament. Yamal has confirmed and earned a spot as one of the frontrunners for the Ballon d’Or. What separates him from his peers is that he is the only player to win the Kopa award for best young players more than a single time. He is also a primary nominee for the Young Talent of the Year award.
On the club side, FC Barcelona has secured multiple La Liga trophies thanks to his help. During the UEFA 2025-2026 campaign, he received 29 fouls in a total of 10 matches. It is important to note that as a young forward with elite strategies such as close control dribbling and extreme agility, defenders, especially the veteran players, tend to engage physically with him. What makes him stand out is his response to this provoking. He always chooses to compose himself and continue to play. Yamal has maintained a miraculous zero red cards for Barcelona or Spain, which is a true miracle for a targeted forward.
Kylian Mbappé, “The Dictator” himself, has accumulated 60 goals and 13 assists between club and national teams this eligibility season. That includes 42 goals in 44 games. He became the World Cup’s all-time leading goal scorer this year, with 22 beautiful goals. He was also La Liga’s top scorer. During the World Cup, Mbappé scored 10 goals and provided 4 assists in only 4 games.
He has numerous historical individual accomplishments. But unfortunately, his consensus power is weaker, and his team trophies were lighter compared to rival nominees. Mbappé has elite spatial awareness, easily dribbling and running past defenses. Kylian is quick with the ball, utilizing precise angles and explosive dribbling. When it comes to fair play, Mbappé is a fair mix of explosive defensive frustration and intense composure. This type of player may just be exactly what voters look for; what they believe defines a generational footballer
For some godforsaken reason, Lionel Messi is still in the running. He continues to haunt this list, as the myth of Lionel Messi will be passed down for generations to come. It is a true testament to his skill and power over the sport.
Rodri has returned again, coming to take his crown. Having previously won the Ballon d’Or in 2024, the midfielder has put together a career defining campaign to claim it once more. As the captain of Spain, Rodri led his country straight to victory in the 2026 World Cup, capturing the prestigious Golden Ball as the World Cup’s Best Player. Operating from the midfield, Rodri achieved a historic, record-breaking 93% passing accuracy during the tournament, completing 747 out of 799 attempted passes to control matches like a grandmaster. His unique ability to completely influence the pitch from this specific position makes his inclusion among the top tier of candidates uniquely impressive.
The moment those lights in the Palladium fade to allow focus on the stage, the numerical statistics won’t matter as much anymore. It’s about the art of the game itself.
